Holi, the festival of colours is right around the corner and Indian travel and tourism industry is abuzz increased demand and bookings. According to Agoda, the travel searches for Holi have increased 2.5 times as compared to the previous years. The travel platform has also shared top destinations that Indians are eager to visit to celebrate Holi. As per the search data, Goa has been crowned as the most popular location, followed by New Delhi & NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore & Jaipur.

Goa takes the crown in terms of most popular destinations. The metropolises of New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and the pink, historic city of Jaipur complete the top five, respectively.

“2023 is a highly promising year for the travel and tourism industry,” said Krishna Rathi, Country Director India at Agoda. “We saw it around Republic Day, and now the search data shows a similar pattern for Holi: There’s a prevalent desire to travel among us Indians, and we’re ready to make the most of every special occasion that comes along.”

Flight travel trends for Holi
Talking about flight travel trends for Holi, Aloke Bajpai, Co-founder & Group CEO, ixigo said, “Holi travel is back with a bang. We have seen a 30 per cent increase in advance bookings for Holi week for leisure travel to popular domestic & short-haul international destinations this year. Jaipur, Goa, Kashmir, Dubai & Singapore are some of the most searched and booked destinations for Holi week. Average airfares across popular routes for travel during Holi week have also surged 10-15% MoM driven largely by strong demand.”

Train travel trends
Sharing insights on travel trends for Holi, Sripad Vaidya, Co-founder & COO, Confirmtkt said that there is a huge jump in demand for train tickets in the run-up to festival as compared to last year. “We have seen a 10 per cent increase in bookings for train travel on routes like Mumbai-Pune, Mumbai-Goa, New Delhi-Varanasi, Patna-New Delhi & Jaipur -New Delhi.To cater to the sudden increase in train travel demand 90 additional Holi special trains have been added by Indian Railways this year,” he mentioned.

According to travel agents, airfares are high, but people are travelling and going for short trips. Some hotels and resorts in different parts of the country, including Maharashtra, are organising special Holi gatherings.

Demand for hotel bookings up 20%
Sharing trends on their booking data with ET TravelWorld, leading corporate travel service provider Yatra said they have witnessed 20 per cent hike in demand for hotel bookings. Talking about the development, Aditya Gupta, Senior VP – Hotels, Yatra Online Limited commented, “On festivals like Holi, consumers typically travel back to their hometown. This has led to an increase in flight bookings in the range of 15 – 20 per cent. We have also seen a surge in booking for destinations like Agra, Mathura, Vrindavan, Varanasi and Amritsar, along with some business hotspots like New Delhi and Hyderabad. The demand in hotel bookings have gone up by 20 per cent in these destinations, and 3-star deluxe and 4-star hotels are the preferred accommodations by consumers for their holi travel plans.”

Signature villas have seen the highest uptake
Sharing few data points on long weekend travel trends on the accommodation front, Deven Parulekar, Founder, SaffronStays said that bigger inventory villas are getting better traction than smaller homes, since larger groups are making long weekend plans. “Location is not a barrier; villas across the regular Lonavala, Karjat, Alibaug have high occupancy, but so do the lesser explored Palghar, Murbad, Igatpuri, Kamshet sectors. Signature villas have seen the highest uptake, in spite of long weekend pricing.”
