Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon (R) signed into law a ban on abortion pills, according to his office on Friday, in what appears to be the nation’s first ban of the medication.
The new law bans selling “any medicine, drug or other substance with the specific intent of causing or abetting an abortion.”
Fifteen other states restrict access to medication abortion including North Dakota, which does not have any abortion providers, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a nongovernmental organization that advocates for better access to reproductive care.
The bill includes penalties of up to six months imprisonment and a fine of up to $9,000.
The new law is likely to be challenged in court.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
